It's all coming up Goo.

2 years ago I did a series of articles on the Independent Games Festival.  It wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I envisioned the series, but I had a good time and found some neat little nuggets of gaming goodness in it.

One of them I found was Tower of Goo, I may even have written about it, but I don't think I did.  It may not have even been an entrant into IGF, but instead something I found while doing research bouncing around the net mimbly-bimbly.  It wasn't a complete game back them, just an exercise in experimental game play, but even then it had a charm about it that I just fell in love with.

Well the guys at 2D Boys have taken the concept, fleshed it out and created a full fledged game out of it.  World of Goo is coming out later this year for Wii and PC.  Mac and Linux versions will follow later.  I've already pre-ordered my PC copy and with it you get a preview beta copy of Chapter 1.  I've played through it and I have to say I'm very impressed.  The game play is exactly the same with the inclusion of a goal to achieve before advancing to the next level.  They've introduced several new Goo types as well as different types of challenges to overcome.  I'm really excited for the release of this one.

I wouldn't hold my breath for and XBLA or PlayStation Network version, however, the control scheme just doesn't lend itself well to a gamepad.

Now this is just bad ass!

I recently found that out that The Incredible Machine may be coming to XBLA.  This is one of my favorite games of all times and the one that sparked my interest in puzzle/physics games.  While looking around for more information I came across a link to a similar game with a new twist.  What a gem, and I can't wait until the game is finished.

A free version of the original game with a limited drawing set is available here.  It only has a few levels, but it is interesting to play and really shows off the potential of the deluxe version.

I must be dreaming!!

After 2 years and multiple delays it seems Spore will have an official release date soon.  According to Will Wright back in October Spore is fully playable and is in final testing.  It was also said that we would have Spore in about 6 months, which would be March.  The release is not supposed to happen until after the fiscal year ends on March 31, so 6 months is about right.  A hard release date is due to be announced by the end of January.

I know this makes many people happy, myself and Sharon included.  No word on any console versions so far, but if this thing is still being published by the bastards at EA it's almost guaranteed in the future.

Yawn! What else ya got?

I still stand behind my statements that this game is NEVER going to see the light of day, but it seems that 3D Realms wants to toy with peoples emotions a little longer or at least keep the hype machine rolling for another year or two.  A teaser trailer for Duke Nukem Forever is now making the rounds of gaming blogs everywhere.  Why should this one be any different?

It looks pretty good, if you can manage to sneak a glimpse during the seizure inducing flashes of what appears to be game play footage spliced into a very mundane pre-rendered sequence. I realise it's just a "teaser" trailer, but 10 years of waiting and we get less than 2 seconds of gameplay footage?

XNA 2.0 Released

This actually happened a couple of days ago, but I ignored while I tried to get my act back together.  Microsoft has released the newest version (v2.0) of XNA.  Included are 2 big new features that many game creators have been waiting for.
 - Networking support for multi-player games.
 - The Guide button can now be accessed through a new Class that also allows for storage device selection and text entry through the new Messenger Kit keypad.

The networking portion is absolutely HUGE for developers.  Not only does it streamline the creation of multi-player games for Windows, but it also gives access to the Live network for multi-player 360 games.  If that wasn't enough to make creators salivate, it will also allow for multi-player games that connect cross-platform allowing PC users to play against 360 users.  Like I said, HUGE!

I may have to dust off my copy of C# and give the new version a whirl.

You can download the new version here.
